Controversy over treatments that use physical punishment to change the behavior of severely autistic children is likely to be renewed
as mental health and legal advocates push for passage of a bill that would ban all so- called aversive therapy programs.
Filed by the Developmental Disabilities Law Center, the bill represents the latest attempt to outlaw aversive therapy since the state
agreed this winter to allow the Behavioral Research Institute of Providence to continue using the treatment.
